How often do you take a backup of your website?

Tags: , , ,

I was reading a post on one of the web hosting forums where one user was complaining about backup related issue that he had with his hosting company. It seems, the server failed and the hosting company did not had a backup and were under the assumption that customer was maintaining his own backup copy. Eventually, the Terms Of Service on hosting company’s website clearly stated that they are not responsible for backup unless specifically paid for. This got me into thinking about those countless number of domains, that are running without a single copy of backup ever!

Do you have a backup copy of your website?

Let’s assume that your hosting company doesn’t backup your website. That leaves us with just one place to look for a backup copy of your website to restore from, that’s your system. There are other reasons to maintain your own backup copy. Example, you outsource your web site development and the developers upload your website directly to your hosting server and leave it there. After some months, the server crashes and your website is gone and so are the developers. How will you restore your website without having a backup copy of your own?

Does your hosting company maintain a backup copy your website?

If you are guessing, don’t! If you don’t know, please contact your hosting company immediately and ask them if they do. Hardware failures are not always predictable, so make sure that you know about the backup and restoration policy of your hosting company before it’s too late!

Who should maintain the backup copy of your website?

Let’s not try to put the monkey on back of each others shoulder. You being the owner of the website has the primary responsibility of maintaining an up-to date backup copy of your website. If the hosting company had agreed to maintain a periodical backup copy of your website when you opened a hosting account with them, it’s there responsibility too. If you are confused, first make a backup of your website then talk to your hosting company and ask them about their backup policy. Better, do it now when things are working fine, once things go wrong, you will be in a lot of trouble. Believe me! I have faced it once.
