Oracle Virtual Machine to take on everyone

Tags: , , ,

In a recent news, Oracle has announced their entry into the virtualization market with their new VM product. This will pretty well shake up the virtualization industry because of the fact that some of their key products such as Oracle Database, Oracle Fusion Middleware and Oracle Applications are all certified with Oracle VM. Their new virtualization product will support both Oracle and non-Oracle applications and that directly impacts existing companies who produce similar virtualization products.

What’s more with Oracle VM?

Oracle’s new VM product is built using Xen opensource, so their product is expected to be available free of cost for everyone to use while they will charge only for the technical support for their product. Oracle VM will support both x86 and x86-64-based systems.

What will happen next?

Some of the prominent hosting companies will soon be able to offer a virtualized Oracle database along with their existing offerings and packages to their customers. Since the entire Oracle DB could be run inside the VM container, hosting companies may leave the option of managing the database to end customers who are familiar with the Oracle database. Doing this will help hosting companies offer even Oracle database along with MySQL and not take on the task of managing the Oracle database themselves, since customers will take care of their Oracle VM instances on their own.

Over the next few months, there could be a lot of hosting companies that will offer Oracle VM. Ask yours, if they would want to! If you are a hosting company, it’s time to get ready for the Oracle VM.
